Find Your System

With so many options for diapers and absorbency, it can be a bit confusing to navigate a cloth diaper store. Here I’ve dedicated a page for you to read about different products and why they may or may not work for you and your kiddos!

What's imporant to you?

Rash Prone

Absorbency- We recommend bamboo/terry inserts. These fibers absorb the quickest and will keep baby’s skin clean and dry. Bamboo is also very soft and won’t irritate any rash baby may have.

Diapers- We recommend AWJ lined diapers. AWJ wicks mouisture away from baby’s skin to keep it dry.

Tips and Tricks- If you are using a diaper cream that isn’t cloth-safe (Contains zinc, oil-based, petroleum jelly, etc.) it’s best to use a liner against baby’s skin when wearing cloth. Especially if your inserts are microfiber. This will prevent staining and damage to the PUL.

Heavy Wetter

Inserts- Specific fibers hold a lot of liquid, while other inserts hold less. You will get a longer wear and less leaks with bamboo cotton.

Diapers- We reccomend pre-flats and fitteds for heavy wetters, especially at night. The 360 absorbency will greatly decrease your chances of leaks. Throw a bamboo/cotton insert in a pre-flat and add a cover over top and in most cases, you have a full-proof system.

Tips and Tricks- Microfiber inserts get a bad rep in the cloth diaper world, but it does have benefits for heavy wetters. Microfiber is super absorbent. It is very prone to compression leaks though. Our advice is to pair a microfiber insert with a bamboo insert, this way the microfiber can absorb all of the liquid, and if there is any compression and the microfiber leaks, the bamboo will catch it and baby’s clothes will stay dry!

On The Go!

The biggest concern active parents have is car seats and longer-wear. Car seats can sometimes cause leaks because of the compression. We recommend using a preflat/contour/fitted with a 360 elastic cover. With elastic around all points of baby’s diaper area, leaks are much more likely to stay contained to the inside of the diaper. This also plays into longer-wear. With this system, adding a super absorbent insert to your preflat/contour/fitted can stretch one diaper much longer. We recommend a bamboo/cotton insert. If you are using a carrier, which also can cause leaks, the 360 elastic covers I mentioned before will be your best friend.

Night Time Systems

Finding a night time system that works has got to be one of the most challenging things about cloth diapering. Expect a lot of trial and error. We have a few systems that have worked for us though.

We love using pre-flats with a super-soaker insert and a 360 elastic cover. We found that the insert does most of the work and sometimes only wake up with the gusset area of the pre-flat damp. The cover catches any leaks that may happen.

We also love fitted diapers. Most have a snap-in snake insert that can be customized to as many layers as your baby needs! 360 elastic covers on top, as always.

Some parents don’t want to touch a soaked fitted or pre-fat in the morning though, which we totally understand! Some babies don’t like to be wet all night either, especially those who are rash prone. Under these circumstances, we recommend using a pocket stuffed with a bamboo insert that is wrapped in a trifold or pre-flat. You’ll get mega-absorbency and baby (and your hands) will stay dry.

The only issue we can see with this system is leaks. With the absorbency only being in the gusset area instead of all over like a pre-flat or fitted, you can get leaks from the top and sides. In this case, we recommened sticking with the same absorbency, but instead of using a pocket diaper, use a cover. We recommened using an AWJ liner agaisnt baby's skin to make sure they stay dry.

Tummy Sleeper

We recommend diapers with front elastic. Tummy sleepers tend to leak from the front, right at their belly button. Front elastic helps keep it all in.
